Discover more about Citadel Ruins

The Citadel, or Cittadella, in Victoria, Gozo, is more than just a collection of old stones; it's a journey through time. Inhabited since the Bronze Age, this fortified city has been at the heart of Gozo's activity for millennia. Originally an acropolis in Punic-Roman times, it evolved into a castle during the medieval period, providing refuge for the island's inhabitants. For centuries, Gozitans were required by law to spend their nights within the Citadel's walls for protection against marauding Turks and Berber corsairs. The Citadel witnessed a devastating Ottoman attack in 1551, where most of Gozo's population was taken into slavery. Rebuilt by the Knights of St. John between 1599 and 1622, the Citadel transformed into a gunpowder fortress. Today, the Citadel offers visitors a chance to explore its historical buildings, including the Baroque-style Cathedral of the Assumption designed by Lorenzo Gafà, and various museums. A combined ticket grants access to the Cittadella Visitors' Centre, the Gozo Museum of Archaeology, the Gran Castello Historic House (Folklore Museum), the Gozo Nature Museum, and the Old Prison. Walk along the Citadel's fortifications for breathtaking 360-degree views of Gozo. Explore the narrow streets and discover hidden gems within its walls. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, the Citadel is a must-see destination on Gozo.
