Mġarr ix-Xini: A Secluded Gozitan Paradise

Mġarr ix-Xini is a stunning inlet located on the southern coast of Gozo, close to the villages of Għajnsielem, Xewkija, and Sannat. This hidden gem is characterized by its narrow bay, flanked by steep, rocky cliffs, leading to crystal-clear turquoise waters. The bay offers a small pebbly beach at its head, providing a gentle slope into the inviting sea.Historically, Mġarr ix-Xini served as a strategic location. During the rule of the Order of Saint John, it was used as a small harbor for galleys. In 1661, the Knights built a watchtower overlooking the bay's entrance to defend against Turkish invaders. This tower still stands today, a testament to the island's rich history. The bay also witnessed a dark chapter in 1551 when invading Turkish forces used it to load captive Gozitans onto their ships during a devastating raid.Today, Mġarr ix-Xini is a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The clear waters teem with marine life, making it ideal for underwater exploration. Divers are drawn to the intriguing caves in the cliff faces and the deliberately scuttled ferryboat 'Xlendi', which serves as an artificial reef. Though the ship ended up upside down when it was sunk, it still makes for an interesting dive site. In 2014, the bay gained international recognition as a filming location for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's movie, 'By the Sea'.
