Discover more about Victoria Lines

The Victoria Lines are a testament to Malta's strategic importance in the Mediterranean. Constructed by the British between 1870 and 1899, they were designed to protect the island from potential invaders landing in the north and threatening the vital harbor installations. The lines run along the Great Fault, a natural geographical barrier that divides the island. The fortifications consist of forts, batteries, entrenchments, and infantry lines. Although never tested in battle, they offer a fascinating glimpse into 19th-century military engineering. Today, the Victoria Lines are a popular hiking trail, offering panoramic views of the Maltese countryside and coastline. Walking along the Victoria Lines, visitors can explore the historic forts and appreciate the strategic importance of this defensive barrier. The most photographed section is near Bingemma Gap, known locally as the 'Great Wall of Malta'. Despite some sections being in ruins, the Victoria Lines remain an intrinsic part of Malta's historical heritage.
