Xlendi Tower: A Sentinel of Gozo's Coast

Perched on a cliff overlooking the azure Mediterranean Sea, Xlendi Tower is a testament to Gozo's strategic importance throughout history. Constructed in 1650 during the reign of Grandmaster Lascaris, it formed part of a network of watchtowers designed to protect the island's coastline from pirates, smugglers, and other maritime threats. The tower's location near Xlendi Bay provided a crucial vantage point for spotting approaching vessels.The tower itself is a rectangular structure, typical of the Lascaris-era watchtowers. Originally armed with two six-pounder guns, later replaced by four-pounder guns, it was manned by a small detachment, including a commander, gunner, and watchmen. The tower remained in active use for over two centuries, serving as a coastal defense post and later as an observation point during World War II.Today, Xlendi Tower is a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors panoramic views of Xlendi Bay and the surrounding coastline. The tower has recently undergone restoration, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Visitors can explore the tower's interior and learn about its history and significance. The surrounding area also offers opportunities for hiking and exploring the rugged coastal landscape, including the nearby Il-Kantra Valley and salt pans. The seabed below the tower is home to the Xlendi Underwater Archaeological Park, featuring the remains of a Phoenician shipwreck.
