Public Bus
To get to Georgetown from Gaithersburg, head to the Gaithersburg Transit Center located at 100 S. Frederick Ave. Take the Ride On Bus Route 55 towards the Shady Grove Metro Station. Once you arrive at Shady Grove, transfer to the Red Line Metro. Take the Metro towards Glenmont and get off at the Dupont Circle Station. From Dupont Circle, exit the station and walk towards the south to 19th St NW. Turn left on 19th St NW and walk until you reach N St NW. Turn right and walk until you reach the waterfront area of Georgetown. This will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes total.
Metro
From Gaithersburg, make your way to the Shady Grove Metro Station. You can take the Ride On Bus Route 55 or a taxi to get there. Once at Shady Grove, board the Red Line Metro towards Glenmont. Travel through several stops and get off at the Farragut North Station. From Farragut North, you can either walk 15 minutes to Georgetown or transfer to the DC Circulator bus (the Georgetown route) which will take you directly to the heart of Georgetown. This trip should take around 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Bicycle
If you're feeling adventurous, you can bike from Gaithersburg to Georgetown. Start from the Gaithersburg City Hall area and head south on Montgomery Village Ave. Connect to the Muddy Branch Trail that will lead you towards Rock Creek Park. Follow the trail until you reach the Capital Crescent Trail. Continue on the Capital Crescent Trail heading towards Georgetown. This scenic route will take about 1 hour and 30 minutes depending on your biking speed.
Walking (from a nearby Metro station)
If you are already near a Metro station like the Friendship Heights Metro Station on the Red Line, you can walk to Georgetown. From the station, head east on Wisconsin Ave NW until you reach the intersection with M St NW. Take a left on M St NW and continue walking until you reach the waterfront area of Georgetown. This walk will take approximately 20-25 minutes.
