Getting There

• Car

  From Newburyport, head south on State Street toward Merrimac Street. Continue onto High Street and then take a right onto Route 1A S. Stay on Route 1A for approximately 8 miles. You will pass through scenic coastal areas, enjoy the views! After reaching Ipswich, turn left onto Central Street, then take a right onto Argilla Road. Continue straight until you reach Refuge Road. Sandy Point State Reservation will be on your left. Note that there is usually no entrance fee, but check for any parking fees when you arrive.

• Public Transportation

  Start at the Newburyport MBTA station. Take the commuter rail service toward North Station in Boston. Get off at the Ipswich station. From the Ipswich station, you can either take a taxi or rideshare service to Sandy Point State Reservation, which is about a 10-minute drive (around 4 miles). Be sure to check the train schedule in advance, as service times may vary.

• Bicycle

  For the adventurous, you can bike from Newburyport to Sandy Point State Reservation. Start by heading south on State Street toward Merrimac Street. Follow the same route as the car directions, taking Route 1A S. This route is approximately 8 miles and has bike lanes in some areas. Once you reach Refuge Road, Sandy Point will be on your left. Make sure to wear a helmet and be aware of traffic especially on Route 1A.
