This excellent day-trip from San Miguel is the only way to explore these towns, a perfect combination of history, culture, and tranquility. I had been to Pozos before without a guide and I didn’t think much of it. A couple of friends were visiting, and wanted to go, so I tried again, and am happy I did. Mineral de Pozos is a sleepy town with so many highlights (abandoned mines, historical landmarks, musical instruments), but it is really spread out. It is difficult to discover it all without a well-acquainted guide, (who also kept clumsy me from falling into a smaller mine opening). Christian, our super friendly, attentive and fun guide was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the region, expertly guiding us, and keeping us enthralled with history lessons and stories, on the drive and while exploring. The drive between Pozos and Xichu is mostly through beautiful mountains. Again, Christian provided us with the area's cultural and historical significance, but also let us enjoy the stunning views in peace when we were lulled by it. Xichu is delightful and magical. It is like a Mexican “Brigadoon”. It is small, but so culturally rich (it is the mecca for a particular type of Mexican music). And, again, our outstanding guide was vital for discovering and enjoying this town. Being able to take a jacuzzi was perfect after a day of exploring and before the drive back.

The Silver Mines at Mineral de Pozos

We live full-time in San Miguel de Allende, and recently had family visiting from the US. We wanted them to experience some of the interesting history of Mexico. We have used Catrina Tours before, and were very glad to have Diego once again as our guide for our first visit to the silver mines located at Mineral de Pozos. Diego is an experienced guide and speaks fluent English. His knowledge of Mexican history runs deep, and he has a nice, informal way of sharing it. After picking the seven of us up at our home, we drove to visit an organic lavender farm close to the mining area of Mineral de Pozos, about an hour from San Miguel. The farm visit was a bonus and we learned about the science and hard manual work involved behind extracting the essences of lavender. We then visited the large site of an abandoned silver mine and toured the ruins of the buildings there. Diego is well-versed in the processes involved as well as what is known about the lives of the miners. The tine flew by, and we were then treated to lunch (included with our tour) at the modern hotel Tesoros. Diego ordered their unique tapas specialties to share, and we enjoyed informal conversation as we ate. This was our second tour with Catrina Tours, and we highly recommend them.
