Car
If you are starting from any location within Lutsen Mountains, head east on MN-61 N. Continue on MN-61 for about 4 miles until you reach the Tofte area. Look for County Road 12 on your left, and take this turn. Follow County Road 12 for approximately 1 mile until you see the parking area for Carlton Peak on your right. There is no fee for parking.
Public Transportation
For travelers using public transportation, you can take the North Shore Shuttle service. Check their schedule for departures from Lutsen Mountains to Tofte. Once you arrive in Tofte, it is about a 1-mile walk to Carlton Peak. Follow County Road 12 from the shuttle stop towards the parking area. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes as the walk may involve some uneven terrain.
Hiking
Once you reach the parking area for Carlton Peak, you can start your hike. The trailhead is well-marked, and the hike to the summit of Carlton Peak is approximately 1 mile long. It takes about 30 to 60 minutes to reach the top, depending on your pace. Be prepared for a moderately challenging hike with some steep sections. Make sure to bring water and snacks for the journey.
