Discover more about Round Island Lighthouse

The Round Island Lighthouse, a historic beacon, has stood as a sentinel for Pascagoula, Mississippi, since 1859. Originally constructed on Round Island, about 4 miles south of the city, it played a vital role in guiding ships through the Mississippi Sound. The lighthouse endured numerous hurricanes and the Civil War, witnessing the ebb and flow of maritime activity for over 125 years. In 1998, Hurricane Georges toppled the lighthouse, leaving only remnants of its former glory. After Hurricane Katrina further damaged the ruins in 2005, the city of Pascagoula and the Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Society collaborated to relocate the remains to the mainland. In 2010, the lighthouse was moved to its current location at Lighthouse Park on Cypress Avenue, marking a new chapter in its history. The relocated lighthouse was meticulously restored, incorporating original bricks and the lantern room. Today, it stands as a museum and tourist attraction, offering visitors a chance to explore its interior, learn about its history, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area. The lighthouse is whitewashed to reflect its appearance in the 1960s and 1970s. Visitors can also view Round Island from Pascagoula's Beach Boulevard.
