Discover more about Old Court House Museum

Vicksburg's Old Court House Museum, a majestic structure completed in 1860, stands as a testament to the city's enduring spirit. Perched atop one of Vicksburg's highest hills, the courthouse was built on land donated by the family of the city's founder, Newitt Vick. Constructed by the Weldon Brothers, who employed 100 skilled slave artisans, the building is an architectural gem, featuring four porticos supported by 30-foot Ionic columns. Originally the Warren County Courthouse, the building witnessed pivotal moments in history, including the lowering of the Confederate flag and raising of the Union flag on July 4, 1863, after a grueling 47-day siege. It also hosted prominent figures such as Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant, and Theodore Roosevelt. Today, the museum boasts thousands of artifacts, from pre-Columbian relics to Civil War treasures, including Confederate flags, portraits, antique furniture and even a teddy bear given by Theodore Roosevelt. Saved from demolition in the 1940s by Mrs. Eva Whitaker Davis, the museum opened in 1948 and continues to operate thanks to the Vicksburg and Warren County Historical Society. Visitors can explore the McCardle Research Library, housing over 1,400 historical volumes. The Old Court House Museum offers a captivating glimpse into Vicksburg's past.
