The Vicksburg Riverfront Murals project is a series of captivating murals painted on the concrete flood walls along the Mississippi River in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Stretching along Levee Street, these murals serve as a vibrant, open-air gallery, illustrating the city's rich history and its vision for the future. The project began in 2002 when the City of Vicksburg commissioned renowned artist Robert Dafford to create the first series of murals. Dafford, with input from local historians, designed and painted the initial 32 panels, each measuring 12 by 20 feet. His work portrays significant events and figures from Vicksburg's past, including its crucial role in the Civil War, its importance as a river port, and various aspects of its cultural heritage. In 2001, prior to Dafford's arrival, local artist Martha Ferris created an abstract mural recognizing the river, railroad and highway. In 2012, a 55-foot mural was added to the Grove Street flood wall, across from the Levee Street murals. The murals have not only revitalized the riverfront area but have also become a source of community pride. The area surrounding the murals has been enhanced with a children's park, playground, and resurfaced roads, making it a destination for both tourists and locals.Visitors can stroll along the riverfront, enjoying the art and the scenic views of the Mississippi River. Each mural has an informative plaque detailing the historical context of the depicted scene. The murals provide a perfect backdrop for memorable photos, and the location is easily accessible, with nearby parks and eateries to complete the experience.
