Alley Spring & Mill is a captivating destination nestled in the heart of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. This historic site, located six miles west of Eminence, Missouri, showcases the natural beauty of Alley Spring, one of the largest springs in the state, and the meticulously preserved Alley Mill.Alley Spring, the seventh largest spring in Missouri, gushes forth an average of 81 million gallons of water daily. The spring's conduit extends at least 3,000 feet underground, drawing water from as far as 15 miles away. The water's striking turquoise hue is due to dissolved minerals, creating a mesmerizing visual. A walking trail loops around the spring, providing visitors with various vantage points to admire its beauty.The Alley Mill, constructed in 1894 by George Washington McCaskill, stands as a testament to the region's rich milling history. This merchant mill utilized advanced roller technology and turbine power, replacing an earlier mill built in 1868. The mill played a vital role in the local farming economy, grinding grain into flour for area residents. Over the years, the mill has been painted white with green trim and, later, a distinctive red, earning it the nickname "Red Mill".Visitors can explore the fully restored mill, which features hands-on displays and exhibits about Ozark culture. The site also includes the relocated Story's Creek one-room schoolhouse, offering a glimpse into early 20th-century education.
