Discover more about Independence Temple site

The Independence Temple, located in Independence, Missouri, is more than just a building; it's a symbol of peace, unity, and the ongoing mission of the Community of Christ. Completed in 1994, the temple's distinctive design, envisioned by architect Gyo Obata, evokes the spiral shell of a nautilus, with a stainless steel spire rising 300 feet into the sky. The temple's story began with a revelation in 1984, building upon over 150 years of prophetic guidance within the Community of Christ. This revelation called for a place dedicated to worship, education, and the pursuit of peace – a vision that has come to life in the welcoming atmosphere of the temple. Inside, visitors can explore a collection of modern and traditional religious art from around the world, a meditation chapel with a Japanese-style garden, and the Temple Sanctuary, which houses a magnificent Casavant pipe organ. The temple stands on land of historical significance to the Latter Day Saint movement. In 1831, Joseph Smith, the founder of the movement, prophesied that a temple would be built in Jackson County, and a portion of land was dedicated for this purpose. Although early members were driven from the area, the Community of Christ's temple now stands on this hallowed ground, symbolizing the enduring hope for a peaceful community. The temple is open to all, emphasizing its inclusive nature. Visitors can attend the Daily Prayer for Peace, which focuses on a different nation each day, or take a guided tour to learn more about the temple's history, art, and mission.
