Getting There

  • Walking

    The Truman Home is located five blocks west of the Visitor Center. From the Visitor Center at 223 N Main St, walk west on Truman Rd, then turn left onto N Delaware St. The Truman Home will be on your left.

  • Public Transport

    From Kansas City, you can take the bus or train to Independence. The bus 24 stops at White Oak at Osage, which is about a 17-minute walk (1374 yards) from the Harry S Truman Presidential Library and Museum. From there, you can take a taxi or walk to the Truman Home. Alternatively, the train stops at Independence Amtrak Station, which is about a 48-minute walk (4097 yards) from the Harry S Truman Presidential Library and Museum.

  • Driving

    From I-435, take Truman Rd. exit 60 and go east 3 miles to the Visitor Center at Truman Rd. and Main St. The Truman Home is five blocks west of the visitor center. A public parking lot is often available across the street from the visitor center. There is also one accessible parking space behind the Noland Home at 216 North Delaware Street.

The Harry S Truman National Historic Site offers a unique glimpse into the life of the 33rd President of the United States. Located in Independence, Missouri, the site includes the Truman Home, where Harry and Bess Truman lived from 1919 until his death in 1972, and other properties associated with him. The Truman Home, also known as the Gates-Wallace home, was built by Bess Truman's grandfather between 1867 and 1885. The house reflects the simple lifestyle the Trumans enjoyed before, during, and after his time in the White House. Guided tours, limited to eight people, provide an intimate look at the home's original furnishings and artifacts. Tickets are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Visitor Center. The Noland Home, across the street, was home to Truman's aunt, uncle, and cousins. While not open for tours, it offers a glimpse into the close family connections that shaped Truman's life. The site also includes the homes of Bess Truman's brothers, George and Frank Wallace. Visitors can begin their experience at the Visitor Center, located in the historic 1928 Independence Fire Station. The Truman Farm Home in Grandview, Missouri, is temporarily closed for tours due to construction, but the grounds remain open for self-guided exploration.
