Discover more about Cunningham Park

Cunningham Park, Joplin's first park, was established on land donated by Mayor Thomas W. Cunningham in the late 19th century. Originally known as Cunningham Grove, it quickly became a beloved community space. In May 2011, the park was almost entirely destroyed by an EF-5 tornado that ravaged the city.Following the disaster, Cunningham Park was rebuilt with the help of volunteers and donations from across the country. Today, it features walking trails, playgrounds, reflective ponds, and picnic areas. The park also includes memorials dedicated to the victims of the tornado and tributes to the volunteers who helped rebuild the community.Visitors can explore the Butterfly Garden and Overlook, a serene koi pond, and a water wall with 38 segments representing the minutes the tornado was on the ground. A replica of the original Proclamation of Restoration fountain stands as a symbol of the city's resilience. Cunningham Park is more than just a recreational area; it's a place for reflection, remembrance, and community gathering.
