Created by Kansas City-based artist Alexander Austin, the mural depicts prominent figures who visited or lived in Joplin during a time of racial inequality. These include jazz saxophonist Charles McPherson, composer Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington, Marian Anderson, Cab Calloway, Ella Johnson, Melissa Cuther, Sammy Davis Jr., Langston Hughes, Dizzy Gillespie, Mamie Smith, and Ella Fitzgerald.The mural also features the Lincoln School, which was the only school for Black primary and secondary students in Joplin, and the Joplin Uplift, a Black-owned newspaper that started in 1926. The Joplin Uplift refers to the name of the newspaper for Joplin's Black community.
