Discover more about Katy Depot

The Katy Depot, constructed in 1896, stands as a testament to Sedalia's rich railroad history. Serving as a vital passenger station and housing division point offices for the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway (MKT), it played a significant role in the city's economic development. The two-story red brick building, with its limestone base and distinctive architectural details, reflects the grandeur of a bygone era. After passenger service declined in the mid-20th century, the depot was largely abandoned until the Missouri Department of Natural Resources acquired it in 1983. Recognizing its historical significance, the Pettis County Historical Society ensured its nomination to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. A three-year restoration project, completed in 2001, transformed the depot into a community treasure, rededicated in May 2002. Today, the Katy Depot serves as Sedalia's official welcome center, offering information and resources for visitors. It also houses railroad heritage exhibits, the Sedalia Area Chamber of Commerce, the Sedalia Convention and Visitors Bureau, and a gift shop. As a trailhead for the Katy Trail State Park, it welcomes hikers and cyclists exploring Missouri's scenic landscapes. Visitors can explore the Deb Biermann Exhibit Gallery, showcasing Sedalia's history and culture, and admire outdoor art installations.
