Sedalia Public Library: A Carnegie Legacy

The Sedalia Public Library, located at 311 W 3rd St, is more than just a repository of books; it's a vibrant center of community life and a monument to Sedalia's history. Established in 1871 by the Sedalia Library Association, the library initially struggled with funding before finding a home in the Pettis County Courthouse.In 1899, Sedalia businessman David E. Smith secured a $50,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie to construct a dedicated library building. Designed in the Greek Revival style by Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, the library opened in 1901 and quickly became a source of civic pride. Its exterior features ornate white terra cotta stone and a limestone foundation, while the interior provides a welcoming space for learning and discovery.Today, the Sedalia Public Library offers a wide range of services, including programs for children and adults, public computers with internet access, printing, scanning, and local history resources. The library also hosts events and activities throughout the year, fostering a sense of community engagement and lifelong learning. As a part of the Boonslick Regional Library system, Sedalia's library provides access to an even broader collection of resources through interlibrary loans.
