Discover more about Dewey Short Visitor Center

The Dewey Short Visitor Center stands as a tribute to the natural beauty of the Ozarks and the engineering marvel of the Table Rock Dam. Named for Congressman Dewey Jackson Short, who championed the dam's construction, the center offers visitors an immersive experience into the history, ecology, and impact of Table Rock Lake. Opened in April 2012, the visitor center has been called the "crown jewel" of Table Rock Lake. The building itself is a striking, modern structure with a glass and steel facade, offering panoramic views of the lake and dam. Inside, three levels of interactive exhibits await, providing information about the White River Watershed, local habitats, and the dam's construction. Exhibits cover a range of topics, including Native American history, Ozarks wildlife, flood management, hydropower, and water safety. Visitors can explore Native American artifacts, view taxidermied animals, and learn about the inner workings of a hydroelectric dam. A 20-minute film, "Taming of the Riviera Blanche," details the construction and purpose of the Table Rock Dam. For the 2024 season, the center has added 11 newly installed taxidermy animals, including an immature golden eagle and two owls, as well as a display case exhibiting historical items from the Corps of Engineers. Outside, visitors can enjoy a walking path, a rock garden with a wooden bridge, and an outdoor viewing deck. The Table Rock Lakeshore Trail, a 2.2-mile paved path, begins near the visitor center, offering scenic views of the lake and surrounding area. A courtesy dock is available for those arriving by boat.
