Discover more about Rocky monastery of Tipova

Tipova Monastery, one of the largest cave monasteries in Moldova and Eastern Europe, presents a unique blend of history, religion, and natural beauty. Carved into the cliffs along the Dniester River, near the village of Tipova, the monastery is approximately 95 km northeast of Chișinău. The monastery complex comprises three religious chambers and monastic cells linked by precarious steps hewn into the rock face. The oldest chamber, the Elevation of the Holy Cross cave church, is believed to date back to the 11th century. The Dormition of Our Lady cave complex, the newest chamber dating back to the 15th century, houses an active church and a small museum. Historical accounts suggest that a monastic community was established here long before the formation of the medieval Moldovan state. The monastery played a role in defending the region against invaders. Legend has it that Stefan cel Mare, a great ruler of Moldova, married one of his wives here. Another legend claims that the mythological poet Orpheus spent his final years in this area and was buried near a waterfall. During the Soviet period, the monastery was closed and suffered destruction, but it was revived in 1994 and is now protected by the state. Visitors can explore the cave complex, admire the views of the Dniester River, and experience the tranquility of this spiritual site. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking and exploring the Moldovan countryside.
