Suta de Movile: Moldova's Mysterious Mounds

Suta de Movile, also known as the 'Land of a Hundred Hills', is a protected area in Moldova, near the Prut River, that presents a landscape of great scientific and aesthetic value. Contrary to its name, the area boasts over 3,500 mounds, creating a unique and undulating terrain. These formations stretch for approximately 8 km in length and 2.3 to 1.7 km in width.Located in the Rîșcani district, between the villages of Braniște and Cobani, the hills rise dramatically from the surrounding farmland, with heights ranging from 1 to 30 meters. The tallest of these, Movila Țiganului (Gypsy Mound), stands out as a prominent landmark. The origin of these mounds has been debated by scientists, with theories ranging from ancient landslides to the remnants of submarine reefs from the ancient Sarmatian Sea.
