Discover more about The Triumphal Arch

The Triumphal Arch, designed by architect Luka Zaușchevici, is a prominent landmark in Chișinău, situated on the Great National Assembly Square. Constructed from polished white stone, the arch features a square shape with four openings, standing 13 meters tall. Its design incorporates ceramic ornaments and Corinthian-style capitals, reflecting the architectural style of the 19th century. Originally, the arch served as a bell tower, housing a 6.4-ton bell cast from captured Turkish cannons. The bell was intended for the Nativity Cathedral but was too large for the cathedral's belfry. A clock was added to the arch in 1842, though it has been damaged and replaced several times throughout history. The arch has undergone several name changes, including Arch of Triumph, Arch of Victory, and Holy Gates. Throughout its history, the Triumphal Arch has been a focal point for national celebrations and military parades. Marble plaques dedicated to Soviet heroes were added in 1945 but removed in 1991. Today, the arch is considered one of the most beautiful triumphal arches in the world and a key landmark for exploring Moldova's rich history and culture.
