History of Chișinău County

Chișinău, the capital of Moldova, first appeared in historical records in 1436 as a humble monastery village under the Principality of Moldavia. The region's early history is deeply intertwined with the rise and fall of various empires and principalities in Eastern Europe.
In the 16th century, Chișinău came under Ottoman rule, which lasted for several centuries. During this period, the city served as a key administrative and trade center within the Ottoman Empire, blending local Moldovan traditions with Turkish influences.
In 1812, following the Russo-Turkish War, the Treaty of Bucharest transferred Chișinău and the surrounding region from Ottoman control to the Russian Empire. This marked the beginning of significant Russian influence in the area, leading to rapid urban development and an influx of Russian settlers.
Under Russian rule, Chișinău became the capital of the newly established Bessarabia Gubernia. The city saw substantial growth during this period, including the construction of important buildings such as the Nativity Cathedral and the Triumph Arch.
After the Russian Revolution, Bessarabia declared independence and subsequently united with Romania in 1918. During the interwar period, Chișinău experienced a cultural renaissance, with Romanian influences becoming more prominent in its architecture, education, and public life.
World War II brought significant turmoil to Chișinău, including heavy bombing and occupation by both Axis and Soviet forces. In 1944, Chișinău was recaptured by the Red Army, leading to its incorporation into the Soviet Union as the capital of the Moldavian SSR. The city underwent extensive reconstruction and industrialization during the Soviet period.
With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Chișinău became the capital of independent Moldova. The city has since strived to balance its Soviet legacy with a renewed sense of national identity, reflected in its evolving cultural and architectural landscape.
