Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Chișinău, take a marshrutka (minibus) from the Central Bus Station to Orhei. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and costs around 30 MDL. Once in Orhei, take a local bus or taxi to Curchi Monastery, which is about 14 km southwest of Orhei. A taxi from Orhei to Curchi should cost around 50 MDL and take about 15 minutes.

  • Car

    If driving from Chișinău, take the E581 road north towards Orhei. After about 40 kilometers, follow signs to Orhei. Upon entering Orhei, continue towards Curchi. The monastery is located at Curchi 3524, with ample parking available. Note that the drive from Chisinau to Curchi is about 48.5 km and will take about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Curchi Monastery, located near the village of Curchi in the Orhei district, stands as a testament to Moldova's rich religious and architectural history. Founded in 1773 by the brothers Iordache and Mihail Curchi, the monastery began as a modest wooden hermitage. Over time, it evolved into a significant monastic complex, becoming one of the most influential institutions in Bessarabia.The monastery's architectural ensemble, primarily developed in the 18th and 19th centuries, showcases a blend of styles. The main church, the Nativity of the Mother of God Cathedral, was built in 1872 in the Baroque style, drawing inspiration from the Church of St. Andrew in Kyiv, designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Its impressive dome reaches a height of 57 meters, making it the tallest in Moldova. Other notable churches within the complex include St. Great Martyr Demetrius, built around 1775, and the Church of St. Nicholas, completed in 2005.Curchi Monastery has endured periods of hardship throughout its history. In 1958, Soviet authorities closed the monastery, repurposing its buildings as a psychiatric hospital until 1995. During this time, the monastery suffered neglect and damage. Restoration efforts began in the early 2000s, and today, Curchi Monastery has regained its role as a spiritual and cultural center, attracting visitors with its tranquility and beauty.Visitors to Curchi Monastery can explore the five churches, admire the intricate frescoes and architectural details, and wander through the peaceful grounds.
