Discover more about National History Museum of Moldova

The National Museum of History of Moldova, established in 1983, stands as a repository of the nation's cultural and historical heritage. Housed in a building that was once the first men's regional lyceum in Bassarabia, the museum's collection has grown significantly since its inception, now safeguarding 348,619 pieces. The museum's permanent exhibition, "History and Civilization," spans from the Paleolithic era to the declaration of independence of the Republic of Moldova. Visitors can explore a wide array of artifacts, including archaeological finds, medieval weaponry, numismatic collections, and exhibits detailing Bessarabia's history and modern Moldova. The museum also features temporary exhibitions that complement the historical narrative. Of particular interest are the exhibits showcasing the Olanesti treasure of the 4th century B.C. and a replica of Trajan's Column. The museum also highlights Moldova's wine culture, recognizing its importance to the country's identity and economy. The building itself has a storied past, having been rebuilt after sustaining damage during its time as a gymnasium. In front of the museum, a copy of the Roman She-Wolf statue with Romulus and Remus stands as a symbol of the region's historical connections. The museum also has five branches: Lazo Family Mansion, Alexei Sciusev Memorial House, the Memorial Museum of the Second Ukrainian Front, the Museum of Victims of Deportations and Political Repressions and the Historical Site "Camp of the Swedish King Charles XII".
