Discover more about Village Museum

Located near the entrance of Chișinău, the Village Museum is an open-air ethnographic complex that transports visitors to a traditional Basarabian village from the 17th to 19th centuries. Officially inaugurated in May 1995, the museum is a branch of the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History and houses a collection of folk architecture monuments. As you stroll through the museum's grounds, you'll encounter traditional Moldovan peasant houses, churches, and other structures, meticulously preserved or reconstructed to reflect the historical and cultural landscape of Moldovan villages. Each building is adorned with period furniture and household items, providing a vivid glimpse into the past. Among the notable exhibits is the oldest ecclesiastical monument in the Republic of Moldova, a wooden church erected in 1642 and brought from the village of Hirișeni for restoration. This towering church, standing at 27 meters, is a testament to the craftsmanship of the era. While the museum's original windmill was destroyed in a fire in 2001, the remaining structures and exhibits offer a captivating look into Moldova's rich heritage. The museum also hosts various cultural events, workshops, and traditional fairs, further enriching the visitor's experience.
