The Capitoline Wolf in Chișinău is a striking monument that embodies the intertwined histories of Moldova and Rome. This bronze replica of the ancient Roman statue portrays the legendary she-wolf, Lupa, nursing Romulus and Remus, the mythical founders of Rome. The statue stands in front of the National Museum of History of Moldova, serving as a constant reminder of the region's Latin heritage and cultural connections. The original statue was donated by the municipality of Rome in 1921, shortly after Bessarabia and Bukovina united with Romania. It was installed in front of the Sfatul Țării Palace in 1923. However, in 1940, during the Soviet occupation, the statue was destroyed for political reasons. In 1990, a new copy was donated by Romania and unveiled on December 1st, symbolizing the unity of Romanians everywhere. The statue was removed for restoration in 2005 and re-unveiled in 2009. The Capitoline Wolf stands as a symbol of resilience and the enduring friendship between Italy and Moldova.
