Discover more about Chișinău Central Synagogue - The Jewish community

The Chișinău Central Synagogue, located on Chabad Lubavitch Street, is more than just a place of worship; it's a symbol of Jewish continuity and heritage in Moldova. Constructed between 1896 and 1898 by architect Tsalel Gershevich Ginger, it's also known as the Synagogue of the Glassmakers. This name is derived from the area where it was built. For many years, an unspoken rule in Chișinău dictated that there should be a synagogue for every 500 Jewish people in the city. In 1964, when the authorities ordered the closure of all other synagogues, this one remained open, serving as the sole active synagogue for over four decades. This made it a vital center for the Jewish community during a challenging period. Today, the synagogue is run by the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic movement and continues to be a vibrant community center. It offers a range of activities, from religious services to cultural events, and provides support to those in need. Visitors are welcome to experience the synagogue's serene atmosphere, admire its architecture, and learn about the history of Jewish life in Chișinău. A kosher restaurant adjacent to the synagogue offers a taste of traditional Jewish cuisine. The Jewish community in Chișinău has a rich history, dating back to the early 18th century. Despite periods of hardship and emigration, a strong Jewish presence remains in the city. The Central Synagogue stands as a reminder of this enduring legacy, offering a space for worship, community, and cultural preservation.
