    Discover more about Curchi Monastery

Curchi Monastery, located near the village of Curchi in the Orhei district, stands as a testament to Moldovan spirituality and architectural heritage. Founded in 1773 by the brothers Iordache and Mihail Curchi, the monastery began as a modest wooden hermitage. Legend suggests an earlier founding by Stephan the Great, though documentary evidence is lacking. The brothers, who later became monks, constructed the first wooden church around 1775, dedicated to St. Great Martyr Dimitrie.Over time, the monastery expanded, with the first stone church, the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, consecrated in 1810. The architectural ensemble that exists today largely took shape in the 18th and 19th centuries. The monastery complex includes five churches, administrative buildings, monastic cells, a refectory, and a bell tower, all enclosed by monastery walls. The main church, the Cathedral “Naşterea Domnului”, showcases a Baroque style inspired by the Church of St. Andrew in Kyiv and was designed by Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Its dome reaches a height of 57 meters, making it the tallest in Moldova. The 20th century brought turbulent times for Curchi Monastery. In 1958, Soviet authorities closed the monastery, repurposing it as a psychiatric hospital from 1961 to 2002, causing significant damage and neglect. Restoration efforts began in the early 2000s, with the UN taking the monastery under its protection. Today, Curchi Monastery has regained its role as a spiritual and cultural center, drawing visitors with its tranquil atmosphere and beautiful architecture. The monastery is undergoing ongoing renovations.
