Getting There

  • Public Transport

    To reach Tipova Monastery via public transport, start from Chișinău's Central Bus Station and take a bus to Orhei (approx. 1.5 hours, 2-4 USD). From Orhei, hire a taxi to Tipova (approx. 1 hour 7 minutes, 13-31 USD). Alternatively, take a minibus from Chișinău to Rezina (1.5 hours). From Rezina, take another minibus or taxi to Ţipova village (10 km). The microbus fare is approximately 30-50 MDL. From Ţipova village, it's a 20-minute walk to the monastery.

  • Car

    If driving from Chișinău, take the E58 towards Rezina. Follow the signs to Tipova, approximately 95 km northeast of Chișinău. Turn off Hwy R20 about 20km south of Rezina, then follow a sealed road through sunflower fields for 12.5km and look for the clearly marked turnoff to Tipova on the left. The monastery is 2.5km from here on a partially sealed road. Be aware that the road leading to the monastery may be narrow and winding. Parking is available near the monastery. Expect to pay around 10 MDL for parking.

The Tipova Monastery, located about 95 km northeast of Chișinău, is a testament to Moldova's ancient history and religious devotion. Carved into the cliffs towering over the Dniester River, this cave monastery is one of the largest and most significant in the region. The complex comprises three religious chambers and monastic cells linked by precarious steps etched into the rock face. The oldest chamber, the Elevation of the Holy Cross cave church, is believed to date back to the 11th century. The Dormition of Our Lady cave complex, the newest chamber, was created in the 15th century and houses an active church and a small museum. These complexes played a vital role in defending the medieval Moldovan state against invaders. Legend has it that Stefan cel Mare, a great ruler of Moldova, married one of his wives here in the 15th century. Another legend claims that the mythological poet Orpheus spent his last years in Tipova and was buried near one of the waterfalls. Visitors can explore the ancient buildings, including the large church adorned with beautiful frescoes. The surrounding area offers opportunities to explore caves and enjoy the natural beauty of the Dniester River and nearby waterfalls. The Tipova Monastery is open to visitors daily.
