Discover more about The Triumphal Arch

The Triumphal Arch, also known as the Holy Gate, is a significant historical monument in Chișinău. Designed by architect Luka Zaușchevici and completed in 1840, the arch celebrates the Russian Empire's triumph over the Ottoman Empire. The structure is located in the Great National Assembly Square, aligning with the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Nativity of God and the Cathedral Bell Tower. Historically, the arch even served as a bell tower, housing a massive 6.4-ton bell cast from captured Turkish cannons. The bell was initially intended for the Cathedral of Christ's Nativity but was too large for the belfry. Today, the arch stands 13 meters tall, constructed from polished white stone with four openings. Its design features Corinthian columns and ceramic ornaments, reflecting a neoclassical style. Over the years, the Triumphal Arch has undergone several changes, including the addition and removal of Soviet-era memorial plaques. Despite these alterations, it remains a beloved symbol of Chișinău and a reminder of the city's complex past. The area around the arch is pedestrian-friendly, making it easily accessible for visitors.
