Valea Morilor Park: Chișinău's Green Retreat

Valea Morilor Park, located in the Buiucani sector of Chișinău, is a beloved green space with a rich history. Established in 1950 at the initiative of Leonid Brezhnev, it was originally named "The Central Park of Culture and Rest of the Leninist Komsomol". The park's current name, meaning "Valley of the Mills," is derived from the watermills that once dotted the area. Designed by architect Robert Kurz, the park spans 114 hectares, featuring a 34-hectare lake at its center.Over the years, Valea Morilor Park has become a vibrant recreational hub. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll or cycle along the scenic 2.5-kilometer path that encircles the lake. The park offers opportunities for jogging, chess, swimming, and fishing. The lake is home to various fish species, including carp and crucian carp, as well as ducks. In winter, the lake transforms into an ice-skating rink.One of the park's highlights is the Summer Theater, also known as the Green Theater, built in 1957. With a seating capacity of 6,700, it is the largest open-air theater in Europe and hosts various cultural events. Other attractions include a daytime cinema, a children's town called Andrieș, a beach, and a boat station. The Cascades Staircase, consisting of 218 steps, is longer than the Potemkin Staircase in Odessa.Valea Morilor Park is a year-round destination, offering different charms in each season. In spring, the park comes alive with blossoms, while summer is perfect for outdoor activities and concerts. Autumn brings stunning fall colors, and winter offers a serene atmosphere.
