Căpriana Monastery: A Moldovan Spiritual Haven

Căpriana Monastery, located 40 km northwest of Chișinău in the village of Căpriana, is one of Moldova's oldest and most revered monastic sites. Established in 1429 during the reign of Alexander the Good, the monastery was initially known as the Vâșnovăț Monastery. It gained royal status and became a focal point of Moldavian culture and religious life.Throughout its history, Căpriana Monastery has experienced periods of prosperity and decline. It was rebuilt between 1542 and 1545 under Petru Rareș after a period of decay. In 1962, during the Soviet era, the monastery was closed and repurposed as a sanatorium for children with tuberculosis, leading to the loss of many icons and church artifacts. However, in 1989, with the national revival, the monastery was restored and reopened, reclaiming its role as a spiritual center.The monastery complex features three churches: the Church of the Dormition (Assumption of the Virgin), the oldest extant church in Moldova, dating back to the 15th century ; the 19th-century Church of St. Nicholas; and the 20th-century winter Church of St. George. The Church of the Dormition houses the tomb of Metropolitan Gavril Bănulescu-Bodoni, an important figure in the region's religious history. Căpriana Monastery is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of Moldovan identity, with its image appearing on stamps, banknotes, and coins. The monastery is set amidst the picturesque Codrii Lăpușnei forests, offering visitors a tranquil and scenic experience.
