Discover more about Dealul Magura

Dealul Magura, situated in the Ungheni district of Moldova, near the village of Țâghira, is a captivating natural landmark. Rising dramatically from the surrounding landscape, the hill stands out with an elevation difference of 150-200 meters. For a long time, with its altitude of 388.8 meters, it was considered the highest point in Bessarabia, before the altitude of Dealul Bălănești was accurately measured. The hill is further distinguished by a 14-meter-high tumulus constructed on its plateau. The origins of this mound remain a mystery, with theories suggesting it could be a necropolis, a military burial site of nomadic peoples, or a signaling point. Archaeological research in 1995 uncovered an Eneolithic settlement of the Cucuteni-Trypillia culture, including ceramic fragments and a unique vase with four female figurines. Over the years, Dealul Magura has seen various transformations. In the interwar period, a cross was erected on the mound's summit, later removed by the Soviets. During the Soviet era, a geodesic pyramid was built, but it was later dismantled and replaced with a stone cross, which was then buried and eventually restored after Moldova's independence. Today, the slopes are largely covered in silvicultural plantations due to landslides. Climbing Dealul Magura rewards visitors with unparalleled views, especially enchanting during sunrise and sunset. It's a serene escape, perfect for connecting with nature and enjoying Moldova's tranquil beauty.
