Grota Duruitoarea Veche: A Journey into Moldova's Prehistoric Past

Grota Duruitoarea Veche, situated near the village of Duruitoarea in the Rîșcani District of Moldova, holds the distinction of being the earliest known monument of human history within the country. This cave served as a natural shelter for prehistoric humans during the Lower Paleolithic period, bringing international recognition to the site.Archaeological excavations have revealed five distinct layers, with four containing evidence of human activity. Within the cave's three chambers, stretching 49 meters in length, researchers have unearthed remains of animals, fragments of tools, and traces of early humans dating back 250,000 to 300,000 years. These discoveries offer invaluable insights into the lives of our distant ancestors and the environment they inhabited. The finds are attributed to the Acheulean epoch and the Middle Gravettian or Early Epigravetian culture.Beyond the cave itself, the surrounding landscape is equally captivating.
