Founded in 1973 on the site of the former Botanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences, this park impresses with its generous dimensions, expanded to 77.8 hectares, and its remarkable biological and landscape diversity.Originally established as the “City Garden” in the mid-19th century, it was designed as a refuge from the busy streets of Chișinău, quickly becoming a popular spot for locals. In 1968, it was renamed “Dendrarium” and underwent a major renovation, adding a lake, botanical garden, and sculptures.The park is home to over a thousand plant species, representing most of the flora found in Moldova. The Dendrarium boasts a significant seed fund containing rare and highly decorative plants, totaling 1,820 taxa. Among the rare woody species for Moldova are the Ginkgo biloba, Metasequoia, and more. The park also hosts nine of the thirteen species of woody plants listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Moldova.Serving as a crucial oxygen reservoir for the city, the Dendrariu functions as a natural air filter. Its tranquil atmosphere allows visitors to momentarily forget they are in the city center, making it an ideal escape.
