Discover more about Eternity Memorial Complex

The Eternity Memorial Complex, located on Strada Pantelimon Halippa in Chișinău, Moldova, is a significant and solemn site dedicated to the Soviet soldiers who died in the Second Jassy–Kishinev Offensive during World War II. The memorial was inaugurated on May 9, 1975, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory in the war. During the Soviet era, it was known as the "Victory Memorial".The complex was built on the site of three old cemeteries: Lutheran, Orthodox, and Lipovan. Designed by architect A. Minaev and sculptors A. Maiko and I. Poniatowski, the most prominent feature is the 25-meter high pyramid consisting of five bayonets. These stylized rifles, made of black and red granite, symbolize the five years of the war, with the years 1941-1945 engraved on each. The bayonets surround the eternal flame of memory, which has been burning continuously for decades. The complex also includes a symbolic belfry that evokes the horrors of war, and a bronze crown that reads, "We didn't forget you". A black cross stands on the site of the graves of fallen German soldiers, and the monument "Grieving Mother" is dedicated to the War of Independence of Moldova from 1991-1992. The arrangement of the monument required hundreds of cubic meters of granite brought from the Russian region of Karelia. Another element is the commemorative stone, representing a stone flower and the star of soldiers originating from Moldova, with the names of Moldovan soldiers who died during World War II engraved on it. The Heroes Cemetery, where soldiers who fell during the Iași-Chișinău military operation in August 1944 are buried, can be seen in the background.Wreath-laying ceremonies are regularly held at the center of the memorial on national holidays, and an honor guard from the Moldovan Army guards the monument, changing hourly. Visitors can stroll through peaceful pathways lined with trees and flowers, offering a space for contemplation and reflection.
