The monument, designed by sculptor Alexandru Plămădeală, was erected in 1927 and opened on April 29, 1928, replacing a monument to Alexander II of Russia.The statue portrays Stephen the Great in regal attire, holding a sword, symbolizing his role as a defender. The monument has a rich history, having been moved several times during periods of political change. In 1940, before the Soviet occupation, it was moved to Vaslui, Romania, and later returned to Chișinău in 1942. It is a central tourist attraction, representing Moldovan history and cultural identity.
