Curchi Monastery, located in the picturesque Vatici valley near the village of Curchi, is a serene escape into Moldova's spiritual heartland. Founded in 1773 by the brothers Iordache and Mihail Curchi, the monastery began as a humble wooden hermitage. Over time, it evolved into one of the wealthiest and most influential monastic institutions in Bessarabia. The monastery's architectural ensemble primarily dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries and includes five churches, monastic cells, and a bell tower harmoniously integrated into the landscape. The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God stands out with its Baroque style, inspired by the Church of St. Andrew in Kyiv and designed by Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Its dome, reaching 57 meters, is the highest in Moldova. Other notable churches include the winter church of St. Demetrius and the church of St. Nicholas. The monastery has had a turbulent history, particularly during the Soviet era when it was repurposed as a psychiatric hospital from 1959 to 1995, leading to neglect and damage. Restoration efforts began in the early 2000s, and today, Curchi Monastery has regained its role as a spiritual and cultural center, attracting visitors with its tranquility and beauty. Visitors can explore the meticulously maintained grounds, admire the frescoes and religious icons, and experience the peaceful ambiance.
