Discover more about Curchi Monastery

Curchi Monastery, located approximately 55 km from Chisinau, is a significant architectural monument of Bessarabia. The monastery's history dates back to 1773 when brothers Iordache and Mihail Curchi established a modest wooden hermitage. Over time, the hermitage expanded, with the first stone church consecrated in 1810. By the 19th century, it had grown into one of the richest and most influential monastic institutions in Moldova. The architectural ensemble comprises five churches, monastic cells, administrative buildings, and a bell tower, harmoniously integrated into the landscape. The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God stands out with its Baroque and Neoclassical design, featuring red-and-white walls and golden domes. Inside, visitors can admire frescoes and religious icons. Other notable churches include St. Demetrius, St. Nicholas, and the Church of All Saints. The monastery faced hardship during the Soviet era when it was repurposed as a psychiatric hospital from 1958 to 1995, leading to neglect and damage. Restoration efforts began in the early 2000s, and today, Curchi Monastery has regained its role as a spiritual and cultural center. The site offers visitors a chance to explore Moldova's religious heritage and experience tranquility amidst the beautiful Moldovan countryside.
