Initially constructed as a wooden fort in 1499 under Stephen the Great, it was part of a defensive network along the Dniester River. The fortress was rebuilt in stone between 1543 and 1546 during the reign of Petru Rareș, retaining its circular shape with five equally spaced bastions to eliminate blind spots. Throughout its history, Soroca Fortress has been a strategic point in numerous conflicts, including the Great Turkish War, where it was defended by Polish King John III Sobieski, and the Prut Campaign, where Moldovan and Russian troops united against the Ottomans. The fortress has hosted many prominent historical figures, such as Bogdan Khmelnitsky and Peter the Great. The fortress's design reflects advanced military architecture of its time. Its circular structure, approximately 37.5 meters in diameter, is made of local limestone and features walls over four meters thick. Visitors can explore the inner courtyard, a historic chapel, and a small museum showcasing the fortress's history and artifacts. Climbing the towers offers panoramic views of the Dniester River and the surrounding landscape.
