Discover more about Rocky monastery of Tipova

The Tipova Monastery, located about 95 km northeast of Chisinau, is a remarkable testament to Moldova's rich history and religious heritage. Carved into the cliffs overlooking the Dniester River, it stands as one of the largest cave monasteries in Eastern Europe. Founded possibly as early as the 6th century BC, the monastery's origins are shrouded in legend. Some believe monks first inhabited the caves in the 10th-12th centuries, while others date the earliest structures to the 16th-18th centuries. Regardless of its exact beginnings, Tipova has served as a sanctuary for centuries, providing a haven for monks seeking solitude and spiritual growth. The monastery consists of three main religious chambers and monastic cells, all interconnected by precarious steps carved into the rock face. The oldest chamber, the Elevation of the Holy Cross church, is believed to date back to the 11th century. The Dormition of Our Lady cave complex, dating from the 15th century, houses an active church and a small museum. Throughout its history, Tipova Monastery has experienced periods of prosperity and decline. In 1776, the monastery underwent significant expansion, with the addition of massive columns and enlarged cells. However, during the Soviet era, the monastery was closed and suffered destruction. In 1975, the ruins were taken under state protection, and in 1994, religious services were resumed. Legends surround the monastery, with one suggesting that Stefan cel Mare, a great ruler of Moldova, married his wife Maria Voichita here. Another legend claims that the mythological poet Orpheus spent his final years in the area and was buried near a waterfall. Visitors to Tipova can explore the cave structures, admire the ancient frescoes, and learn about the monastery's history. The surrounding landscape offers hiking trails, waterfalls, and stunning views of the Dniester River.
