Discover more about The Monument to the Liberators of the City

The Monument to the Liberators of the City, located on Pravda Street in Tiraspol, stands as a poignant reminder of the region's turbulent past and the enduring spirit of its people. Officially opened in 1969, the monument marks the 25th anniversary of Tiraspol's liberation from Axis forces during World War II. Soldiers of the 57th and 82nd Rifle Divisions of the Soviet 37th Army retook the city on the evening of April 12, 1944. The memorial commemorates veterans and those who died in the Great Patriotic War, the Soviet-Afghan War, and the Transnistria War. The complex includes a T-34 tank, symbolizing the soldiers who fell during the Great Patriotic War. This particular tank participated in liberating Ukraine, Moldavia, Bulgaria, and Hungary as part of the 7th Guards Mechanized Corps. Damaged during the Budapest Offensive at Lake Balaton, the war machine was transported to Tiraspol in April 1945. A capsule containing earth from Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) is stored beneath the tank. Later additions to the memorial include a Wall of Memory, erected during a reconstruction in the late 2000s, which bears the names of Transnistrian defenders and civilians killed between 1990 and 1992. A sculpture of a Grieving Mother, created by V. Tkachenko, was also added. In October 2011, the Chapel of St. George the Victorious was built and consecrated on the site.
