Discover more about Curchi Monastery

Curchi Monastery, located 14 km southwest of Orhei in the Vatici River valley, is a prominent architectural monument of Bessarabia. Founded in 1773 by the brothers Iordache and Mihail Curchi, it began as a small wooden hermitage and evolved into one of Moldova's wealthiest and largest monasteries. The monastery's architectural ensemble, primarily constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries, includes five churches, monastic cells, administrative buildings and a bell tower. The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God, designed in the Baroque style by Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, stands out with its striking red-and-white walls and golden domes. The church was inspired by the Church of St. Andrew in Kyiv. Inside, visitors can admire beautiful frescoes and religious icons.Throughout its history, Curchi Monastery has faced numerous challenges. During World War II, a fire damaged the icons and gilded iconostasis, and two belfries were destroyed. From 1959 to 1995, the monastery was repurposed as a psychiatric hospital during the Soviet era, leading to neglect. Restoration efforts began in the early 2000s, and the monastery has since regained its spiritual and cultural significance. Today, Curchi Monastery is undergoing complete renovation.Visitors can explore the meticulously maintained grounds, featuring flowerbeds, fountains, and tranquil paths. The monastery offers a peaceful atmosphere for relaxation and reflection, attracting pilgrims and tourists alike.
