Constructed from polished white stone, its two tiers include ceramic ornaments and a clock that has been a notable feature since the 19th century. Originally, the arch also functioned as a bell tower, housing a massive bell cast from captured Turkish cannons. The bell, intended for the Nativity Cathedral, was too large for the cathedral's belfry and was instead placed in the arch. Throughout its history, the Triumphal Arch has undergone several name changes, including Arch of Triumph, Arch of Victory during Soviet times, and Holy Gates. In 1945, marble plaques dedicated to Soviet patriotic scenes were added but were later removed in 1991. Today, the Triumphal Arch is a key landmark in Chișinău, serving as a backdrop for military parades and public events.
