Discover more about Tipova Monastery

Tipova Monastery, located approximately 95 km northeast of Chișinău, is a remarkable testament to Moldova's rich religious history and natural beauty. Carved into the cliffs overlooking the Dniester River, it stands as one of the largest cave monasteries in Eastern Europe. The monastery's origins trace back to the 11th-12th centuries when monks first began carving cells into the steep rock face. These provided a secluded sanctuary and a strategic defense against invaders. The complex consists of three main religious chambers, interconnected by narrow, precarious steps hewn into the rock. The oldest section, the Elevation of the Holy Cross cave church, is believed to date back to the 11th century. The Dormition of Our Lady cave complex, dating from the 15th century, includes an active church and a small museum. Over the centuries, Tipova Monastery has experienced periods of prosperity and decline. In 1776, the monastery underwent significant expansion, with the addition of massive columns dividing the complex into larger sections. During the Soviet era, the monastery was shut down and suffered destruction. However, in 1975, the ruins were designated as a protected site, and religious services resumed in 1994. Legends intertwine with the monastery's history, with some claiming that Stefan cel Mare, a prominent Moldovan ruler, married his wife Maria Voichita here. Another legend suggests that the mythological poet Orpheus spent his final years in the area and was buried near a waterfall. Visitors can explore the surrounding Tipova nature reserve, which features stunning landscapes, forests, waterfalls, and the Dniester River.
