Getting There

Walking

From the Prince's Palace of Monaco, walk northeast along Avenue de la Quarantaine. The walk is approximately 750 meters and should take about 10 minutes. The theatre will be on your left.
Public Transport

From the Moneghetti area, walk to the nearest bus stop at Place des Moulins. Take Bus Line 1 towards Monte Carlo and get off at the 'Jardin Exotique' stop. From there, walk up the hill along Avenue de la Quarantaine for about 5 minutes. The Fort Antoine Theatre will be on your left, just past the gardens. A single bus fare is approximately €1.50.

Fort Antoine Theatre, nestled on the north-eastern point of the Rock of Monaco, is more than just a performance venue; it's a historical landmark with a captivating past. Constructed as a fortress in 1714 by Prince Antoine I during the War of the Spanish Succession, it was intended to defend Monaco from potential invasions. The Prince even reportedly melted down his gold and silver to fund its construction.Over the centuries, the fortress served various purposes. It was briefly garrisoned during the French Revolution and later used as an air raid shelter during World War II. In 1944, retreating German troops dynamited Fort Antoine, leaving it in ruins. Prince Rainier III rebuilt it in 1953, transforming it into the open-air theatre that stands today.The theatre retains its military architectural elements, including a corner guard tower, protective parapets, and a pyramid of cannonballs at its center. The parapet is emphasized by pittosporum hedges. With seating for around 350 spectators, the theatre provides an intimate setting for enjoying plays, concerts, and other performances. The summer season typically runs from July to August, offering a diverse program of music, theatre, and events showcasing both established and emerging talents.
