Discover more about Tête de Chien

Rising 550 meters above sea level, Tête de Chien (Dog's Head) offers the most spectacular views of Monaco and the French Riviera. The name, derived from the old Occitan language, refers to the rock's supposed resemblance to a dog's head, though it takes some imagination to see it. Historically, the site held strategic importance. Roman troops were stationed here after the conquest of Gaul, and German troops occupied it during World War II. Fort Massena, built in the late 19th century, sits atop the rock, once serving as a key defensive structure. Today, the fort houses an antenna research laboratory and is not open to the public. From the summit, visitors can enjoy a panoramic vista encompassing Monaco, the Italian coastline, and the French Riviera stretching towards Nice and Cannes. The steep cliffs offer a thrilling, albeit unprotected, experience. Tête de Chien is also a popular spot for hiking and rock climbing.
