The Museum of Stamps and Coins in Monaco, located on the Terrasses de Fontvieille, offers a fascinating journey through the principality's history through its philatelic and numismatic collections. Founded in 1995 by Prince Rainier III, the museum opened to the public in January 1996 and has since become a prominent cultural institution. The museum comprises two main halls. The first hall, known as the Rare Stamps Room, displays Monaco's first stamps issued in 1885 by Charles III, along with pre-philately documents and Sardinian and French stamps used before Monaco issued its own. Exhibits also showcase documents and machinery used in the stamp-printing process. The second hall features a complete collection of Monegasque coins dating back to 1640, issued by Prince Honoré II, as well as plaster casts used to mint the coins. Beyond stamps and coins, the museum displays machines and tools used in their creation, including a stamp printing press and a 19th-century monetary pendulum. The museum also hosts temporary numismatic exhibitions from across Europe and the MONACOPHIL exhibition every two years, attracting prestigious stamp collectors worldwide. Visitors can also purchase currently available stamps and coins issued by the Principality at the museum shop.
