Église de Sainte-Dévote: Monaco's Patron Saint

The Église de Sainte-Dévote, nestled in the Vallon des Gaumates, is more than just a church; it's a symbol of Monegasque identity and faith. Dedicated to Sainte Dévote, the patron saint of Monaco, the church's history is intertwined with the legend of the young Corsican woman martyred in the early 4th century. According to the legend, her body was transported by boat to Monaco and buried in a chapel in the valley.The church has humble origins, with the first chapel built before 1070. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous restorations and expansions, reflecting various architectural styles. The current church was inaugurated in 1871 under Prince Charles III. Inside, visitors can admire the stained-glass windows, which were restored in 1948 after being destroyed during World War II.The Église de Sainte-Dévote holds a special place in Monegasque tradition. Every year, on January 26th and 27th, the Feast of Sainte Dévote is celebrated with fervor. The celebrations include a traditional mass in the Monegasque language, a procession of the Saint's relics, and the burning of a boat on Quai Albert Ier by the Princely Family. The church is also part of the Monaco Grand Prix circuit, with the first corner named after Sainte Dévote.
